Here are some scarf patterns I've created. Some for machine knitting, some for hand knitting. Click on images for a larger view. Enjoy!

Scarf 1 - Ribbed Eyelash (MK)

If I'd paid a bit more attention I probably could have joined the second ball of yarn so that the pattern continued without breaking in the middle. Ah well, next time. I prefer making ribbed scarfs on the machine, as they lay flat and have great stretch.

Yarn: Bernat Eyelash, Color: Cool. 2 - 50g balls used.
Finished size: Approximately 6.5" wide, 40" long.
Machine Used: Singer 155 Chunky with Ribber
Stitch Size/Tension: (For main work:) Knitter: 5, Ribber: 5, Tension mast: 1
Instructions:
  1. Cast on 24 stitches in 1x1 EON ribbing. (I used the "Tighter Cast on Method" described in the manual). Set row counter to 000.
  2. Work 4 rows.
  3. Increase 1 stitch on the carriage side for each of the next 2 rows. (Staying in 1x1 ribbing.)
  4. Work 2 rows.
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4, two more times. (now have 30 stitches)
  6. Work to row 135.
  7. Decrease 1 stitch on the carriage side for each of the next 2 rows.
  8. Work 2 rows.
  9. Repeat steps 7 & 8, two more times. (now back to 24 stitches)
  10. Work 4 rows. Cast off.

Scarf 2 - Ribbed Fun Fur (MK)

Almost ran into trouble with this one. Some of the "hairs" got caught in the ribber gate pegs and pulled some of the stitches. Luckily they eventually went back to where they should be. Keep an eye on it!

I have since made 2 more, wider versions. By casting on with 42 stitches, increasing to 52 stitches (in same manner described below), the scarf ended up about 9" wide. This of course took more yarn. I made one about 4 feet long, working 152 rows (not counting rows where I increased & decreased). Another was about 5 feet long working 210 rows.

Yarn: Lion Brand Fun Fur, Color: Champagne. 2 - 50g balls used.
Finished size: Approximately 6" wide, 40" long.
Machine Used: Singer 155 Chunky with Ribber
Stitch Size/Tension: (For main work:) Knitter: 4.., Ribber: 4.., Tension mast: 5
Instructions:
  1. Cast on 30 stitches in 1x1 EON ribbing.
(now have 36 stitches)
  6. Work to row 154.
  7. Decrease 1 stitch on the carriage side for each of the next 2 rows.
  8. Work 2 rows.
  9. Repeat steps 7 & 8, two more times. (now back to 30 stitches)
  10. Work 4 rows. Cast off.

Scarf 3 - Cozy Red (Hand)

This yarn turned out to be too full and shaggy to be knit with the machine so I did it by hand. I knit garter stitch at each end and a 4 stitch border on the sides so it wouldn't curl. Turned out to be a wonderfully cozy scarf.

Yarn: Patons Allure, Color: Garnet. 2.5 to 3 - 50g balls used.
Finished size: Approximately 8" wide, 40" long.
Needles used: 6mm (American 8) and 7.5mm (old pair of #1)
Instructions:
  • With 6mm needles, cast on 24 stitches.
  • Knit 4 rows.
  • Switch to 7.5mm needles:
  • *Knit a row. Following row: Knit 4 stitches, Purl 26 stitches, Knit 4 stitches.*
  • Repeat * to * until almost desired length.
  • Switch to 6.5 mm needles, knit 4 rows. Cast off.

Scarf 4 - No-Rib Boa (MK)

This was my first scarf. Didn't have the ribber set up and just wanted to get it done so I didn't bother with the shaping and ended up with quite a flare at the ends of the scarf. It also wants to curl a little.

Yarn: Bernat Boa, Color: Peacock. 2 - 50g balls used.
Finished size: Approximately 8" wide, 37" long.
Machine Used: Singer 155 Chunky
Stitch Size: Didn't make note of stitch size, but was BIG, maybe a 7 or 8?
Instructions:
  1. E-wrap cast on 30 stitches. Set row counter to 000.
  2. Work until almost out of yarn (about 135 rows?). Cast off.
